Team India’s consistent performances reflect the “robust” domestic cricket structure in the country, chief selector M.S.K. Prasad said on Tuesday.

“The beauty of Indian cricket lies in our domestic cricket which is robust, and the system that the BCCI has developed and the quality of games that it has conducted. Every match is conducted so well with proper video analysis, proper umpires and match referees. A wonderful domestic system that we have which no other country in the world has... If you look at the number of matches that happen in Indian domestic cricket, it’s way higher than those in other countries. The quality of domestic cricket has to keep growing with every passing year,” Prasad told The Telegraph.

The result of the three-match Test series that ended here on Tuesday reflected India’s strong edifice, he said.

Prasad explained: “Whoever has been groomed through the India A process, whether it’s Mayank Agarwal or Hanuma Vihari or a Navdeep Saini, you need to see the hard work put in by everyone behind these young players.

“We have had about 15 players making their debut in the last three years. There was a system put in place and because of that system, there has been a smooth transition.”

Prasad praised left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem for his impressive debut at home. The Jharkhand player, on a hat-trick after striking twice in successive deliveries to complete India’s victory in the final Test, may have to wait a while for his next (Test) match. “Kuldeep Yadav got injured and that’s when Nadeem came into the squad. So let’s be fair because Kuldeep got five wickets in the last Test match he played (versus Australia at the SCG early in January).

“As for Nadeem, with all his first-class experience and quality bowling, he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. But he has to be patient. He will get his chance,” Prasad said.

The chief selector also praised Sanju Samson, who scored the highest runs in List A cricket as wicketkeeper-batsman in this Vijay Hazare Trophy, suggesting the Kerala player could be selected for the T20Is versus Bangladesh.

“Guys like Sanju, Shivam Dube and the 17-year-old guy (Yashasvi Jaiswal) have been phenomenal and these guys are certainly the future.

“The performances by these youngsters carry their own weight. If you see Sanju’s performances for India A in the recent matches against South Africa A, they are inspiring. All these guys have been doing well, but where we can slot them is what we have to look at,” Prasad said.
