Juventus’ Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has gone into quarantine in his Madeira home after his club teammate Daniele Rugani tested positive for coronavirus.

Ronaldo flew to the Portuguese island, where he was born, to visit his mother, who recently suffered a stroke, before the news broke. He has chosen to stay put rather than fly back to northern Italy where the outbreak is at its most rampant.

Ronaldo and Rugani shared a dressing room on Sunday when Juventus beat Inter Milan 2-0 behind closed doors.

Rugani on Thursday said he was fine, shortly after Juventus said the defender had tested positive for coronavirus, the first player in Serie A to do so.

The Turin side are one of Europe’s biggest clubs with a squad that includes five-time World Player of the Year Ronaldo.

“You’ve read the news, so I want to reassure everyone who’s worried about me, I’m fine,” Rugani said on Twitter.

“I urge everyone to respect the rules, because this virus makes no distinction! Let’s do it for ourselves, for our loved ones and for those around us.”

Rugani, who is not a regular first team player, has made seven appearances this season, including two in February.

The 25-year-old “is currently asymptomatic”, the Turin giants said, but the club is “currently activating all the isolation procedures required by law, including those who have had contact with him”.

A source close to Juventus said the entire squad will have to spend two weeks in quarantine, meaning they would not be able to face Olympique Lyonnais in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on March 17.

In a training report, Juventus said: “Ronaldo has not trained and remains in Madeira pending developments related to the current health emergency.”

Rugani is the first top-flight footballer to fall victim to the virus. He has spent the last seven years at Juventus apart from a two-year loan spell at Empoli. He has, however, played just three league games this season, most recently against Brescia on February 16 and SPAL on February 22.
