Former England international and Liverpool forward Robbie Fowler has been named the head coach of East Bengal for a two-year tenure, the team’s principal owner, Hari Mohan Bangur, announced on Friday.

“We are happy to appoint the legendary Robbie Fowler as head coach for the Indian Super League (ISL) season. It is a two-year contract as of now but we hope to have a long, fruitful, and trophy laden collaboration,” Bangur, the managing director of Shree Cement, said in a statement.

Former India captain Rennedy Singh will be one of the assistant coaches, the release added. Seven other foreign coaches have also been signed.

Fowler, 45, nicknamed “God” by Liverpool supporters, last managed A-League side Brisbane Roar FC, guiding the team to the play-offs and fourth position in the league before the season was disrupted.

With 163 strikes, he is the Premier League’s seventh highest goal scorer.
