Real Madrid, Barcelona and the Spanish football federation have rejected La Liga’s deal with private equity firm CVC, but the League remains upbeat as 38 of the 42 clubs have agreed to come on board in Thursday’s general assembly meeting.

Alongside Madrid and Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao and second division club Real Oviedo have opposed the deal as the planned investment from CVC now is between 2.1 and 2.2 billion euros, down from the 2.7 billion euros originally mooted.

Trying to emphasise that CVC hadn’t come to save the league after all the losses it incurred because of the pandemic, La Liga president Javier Tebas focused on the benefits of the deal.

“We haven’t sold anything to CVC. It has come to help us build a bigger, stronger league.

“Only 15 per cent of the money can be used to pay off debts, while 70 per cent is for investment in infrastructure, and investment in sports complex and stadiums so that the clubs can grow,” Tebas said during a global media conference.

Tebas once again lashed out at Madrid and Barcelona.

“They voted against it because they are in favour of the Super League. They are not interested in a league (like La Liga) that is powerful and strong,” he said.
