The BCCI has decided to host the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season instead of Ranji Trophy after the state associations ruled in favour of conducting the one-day 50-over tournament.
This is the first time there will be no Ranji Trophy since its inception in 1934-35. The BCCI has also announced that the senior women’s and Under-19 men’s 50-over competitions would be held in the current domestic season.
Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, wrote to the various state associations on Friday that “this has been decided after having received your (state associations) feedback”.
Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, was in favour of hosting the Ranji Trophy but the plan had to shelved.
Shah wrote that “it has been difficult to plan the cricket calendar on account of the precautions that are necessary for the safe conduct of the games.”
