WV Raman benefited from the good work done by Ramesh Powar who was replaced as women’s coach in December 2018 following an outburst against him by India’s one-day and Test captain Mithali Raj. That was the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC)’s logic behind reinstating Powar as head coach of the women’s team on Thursday.

Powar, according to sources, had made it clear to the CAC members, comprising chairman Madan Lal, Rudra Pratap Singh and Sulakshana Naik, that he wanted to move on as a professional and didn’t harbour any “ill-feelings”.

“Powar told us that there was no controversy or enmity between the two... That he wasn’t at fault and never said anything against anyone,” Lal told The Telegraph.

“He made it clear that the team’s performance will be most important and that he will do everything that will put the team in the right direction,” the CAC chairman said.

Powar’s performance as Mumbai coach recently where they won the Vijay Hazare Trophy after a disastrous Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign also went a long way

in his replacing Raman. India’s loss to South Africa at home in both the ODIs and T20Is had brought Raman’s role under the scanner.

Mithali has already announced that she will bring the curtains down on her illustrious career after next year’s ODI World Cup. Powar’s intentions and vision on the team though will be known when the squad for the England tour is selected on Friday.

The women’s team is scheduled to play one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is in England. The squad will fly out with the men’s team on June 2.
