Kapil Dev feels there’s no reason to remove Ravi Shastri from the India head coach’s position if he continues to produce results.
Shastri’s contract ends after the completion of the T20 World Cup in November. Whether he gets a fresh contract depends on the BCCI and also on his wish to re-apply for the coveted post.
Kapil, though, was clear with his views on the matter. “I don’t think there is any need to speak about it at the moment.
“Let this Sri Lanka series get over. We’ll get to know the kind of performance our team has dished out,” Kapil told ABP News. “If you’re trying to groom a new coach, there’s nothing wrong in it. Then again, if Shastri continues to do a good job, there’s no reason to remove him either. So only time will tell. Before that, I think it (speculation) will put unnecessary pressure on our coaches and players.”
Under Shastri’s supervision so far, India have twice won a Test series in Australia and also reached the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup and the WTC final.
Talking about the Virat Kohli-led team gearing up for the England Tests and the side led by Shikhar Dhawan warming up in Sri Lanka, Kapil said: “The Indian team has a good bench strength. If players get the opportunity and India can assemble two teams that can claim to win in both England and Sri Lanka, there’s nothing better.”
