The top scorer of the on going I-League, Mohun Bagan midfielder Fran Gonzalez, has set a simple target for the Derby against East Bengal on Sunday.
“We have to continue good work till the final whistle. The match is between two good teams, so we cannot relax. We have to work hard to win the game. And me and my team want to log full points from the match. We are looking forward to do that,” Gonzalez told The Telegraph on Saturday.
Both the teams met on September 1 in a CFL clash, Bagan dominated the proceedings but the game ended in a barren draw. Gonzalez believes they can win this time. “We are better prepared now. And things go according to our plan, we will win the game,” he said.
Bagan coach Kibu Vicuna echoed Gonzalez. “Both the teams are well prepared. The other thing is that last time, only three foreigners played for the each side, but now we can play five. We perhaps did a little bit better than the opponents in the last game, but overall it was equal. Sunday it’s a new game, but our target remains the same — we want three points from the game,” Vicuna said.
East Bengal coach Alejandro Menendez Garcia also feels that the teams are more settled now. “It is going to be a very different Derby. We were in pre-season during CFL. Both teams were growing and preparing. Now the teams are more settled. A win in this match will help you to be in a better position in the league,” Alejandro said.
Vicuna believes they do not have any advantage going in to the Derby. “Every Derby is special. The dynamics of the two teams are different, but in a Derby every one is equal. Not just in the Calcutta Derby, but this is true around the world. We are in a good mood and we are focused on this match,” he said.
East Bengal lost the last two I-League games they played — one against Churchil Brothers and another versus Gokulam Kerala FC. Alejandro thinks they should no be judged on those results alone. “Fifteen days ago we were top of the table. It was almost one year without losing a game in I-League. I think judging on two games is short perspective. You have to have a bigger picture,”he said.
East Bengal strikers have not been able to convert easy chances while their defence is conceding silly goals. “We are creating numerous chances, but sometimes we convert them, sometimes we don’t. We scored goals, which were not given,” he said.
Former Sevilla striker Baba Diawara, who joined Bagan, is yet to score his first goal for the new club.
But Bagan coach Vicuna is not worried about that. “I don’t doubt his abilities. He is a very good player. He has played for Sevilla. We need to be patient with him,” he said.
