Mohammedan Sporting will play in the I-League after a gap of seven years. They secured their berth by defeating Bhawanipore FC 2-0 in the I-League Qualifiers at the Kalyani Stadium on Friday.

Vanlalbiaa Chhangte and Gani Nigam scored one goal each as Mohammedan Sporting registered their third win in as many matches.

Monday’s last round of matches are now of academic interest. Even if Mohammedan Sporting, who have nine points, lose to FC Bengaluru United, and Bhawanipore, with six points, beat ARA FC, Mohammedan Sporting would be through by virtue of their better head-to-head record against Bhawanipore.

Mohammedan Sporting could have taken the lead as early as in the third minute, but for Bhawanipore goalkeeper Shilton Paul, who brilliantly saved Chhangte’s attempt from close range.

Chhangte, however, scored in the 28th minute and substitute Nigam doubled the lead in the 67th.
