The Manchester giants had a sorry day in the Premier League on Saturday.

While Manchester City’s winning start to the League season ended in a 1-2 loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers, United slumped to their fourth defeat of the campaign as an early Joachim Anderson strike earned Crystal Palace a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

An own goal from Ruben Dias and a goal from Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan snapped City’s run of winning their opening six Premier League games of the season, despite a free-kick goal from Julian Alvarez.

Three days after City’s first loss of the season to Newcastle United in the League Cup, the defeat to Wolves meant back-to-back losses for City for the first time since January.

United, on the other hand, continued to struggle. Having tasted defeat in their previous home league match, against Brighton and Hove Albion, the below-par hosts again found themselves behind in the 25th minute as Anderson arrowed into the top corner.

With plenty of time to find a leveller on home turf, clear-cut chances remained few and far between in the Manchester rain, with Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone enjoying a quiet afternoon.

Mason Mount missed United’s clearest opening in the second half, with Palace seeing out a victory that moved the visitors up to ninth in the standings, one place above the 20-time top-flight champions.

Gunners on fire

Kai Havertz scored his first goal for Arsenal as his new club cruised to a 4-0 win over Bournemouth.

Arsenal eased to victory with goals from Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Havertz and Ben White. The Germany forward had not scored since joining Arsenal from Chelsea this summer.

Luton’s first

Two goals from set pieces gave Luton Town their first-ever Premier League victory as they beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park, lifting the promoted Hatters out of the bottom three and piling on the misery for the Merseysiders. Luton rose to 17th in the table on four points, one place behind Everton on goal difference.

Ollie hat-trick

Ollie Watkins scored a hat trick as Aston Villa routed Brighton and Hove Albion 6-1. It was Watkins’ second hat trick of the season, having also netted three against Hibernian in the Uefa Europa Conference League.

An own goal by Pervis Estupinan and strikes from Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz completed Villa’s win.
