South Africa began to break down Sri Lanka’s resistance late on the second day of the second and final Test on Monday and the visitors now have a tough job to save the match and the series.
Sri Lanka were 150/4 in their second innings at stumps for a lead of only five runs with only one more recognised batsman to come. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne was unbeaten on a defiant 91 at the end of the day’s play.
In just two days, 24 wickets have fallen at the Wanderers.
Earlier, Vishwa Fernando took 5/101 to restrict South Africa to 302 in their first essay. Opener Dean Elgar made 127 and Rassie van der Dussen 67, and the duo shared a 184-run stand.
Brief scores (Stumps, Day II): Sri Lanka 157 & 150/4 (D. Karunaratne 91 batting). South Africa 302 (D. Elgar 127; V. Fernando 5/101).
