The La Liga title race was blown wide open after Barcelona and Atletico Madrid played out a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou on Saturday.
The stalemate means that should third-placed Real Madrid beat fourth-placed Sevilla on Sunday, they will move top of the table — level on 77 points with Atletico — but ahead given their superior head-to-head record with just three games to play.
Barcelona moved up to second place on Saturday with 75 points.
“We’re still in the mix. La Liga’s still wide open, three games is a lot even if we know it’s not in our hands anymore,” Barca defender Gerard Pique said.
“Anything can happen. I’d like to know if any other side in La Liga has won four in a row, it’s only something we’ve done.
“If we win our remaining three matches, I think we’ll win the league. We’re going to fight until the end, even if we haven’t done what we needed.”
The visitors enjoyed much the better of the first half, with Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen making a number of stops to keep his side level.
Atleti forward Angel Correa was also denied by a last-gasp block from Clement Lenglet when he appeared set to score, while defender Felipe missed arguably the most gilt-edged opportunity of the game just before the break, firing over from close range after a well-worked corner.
Barca’s best chance came through a piece of brilliance from forward Lionel Messi, who slalomed his way past five opponents, only to see Jan Oblak produce a fingertip save.
The Catalans improved after the break, with substitute Ronald Araujo’s effort ruled out for offside before fellow replacement Ousmane Dembele’s close-range header sailed over the bar.
However, ultimately neither side was able to find a way through and they handed the initiative back to Real in what has been a topsy-turvy season.
Ramos ruled out
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos may have played his last game for the club after they announced on Saturday that he had picked up a hamstring injury.
Ramos’s contract runs out at the end of June and there are only four La Liga games remaining this season.
“Following the tests carried out on Sergio Ramos by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with tendonitis in the muscle of his left hamstring. His recovery will continue to be assessed,” Real said in a statement.
Ramos has admitted to being left frustrated at how the 2020-21 campaign has played out.
Ramos has posted on Instagram: “The truth is that I have been a pretty tough few weeks. Luckily, for a few days now I have been feeling better, but in football as in life, bad luck also plays a role.
“Yesterday (Friday) I was training on the pitch and I noticed a puncture in my left calf. Today (Saturday) I have been tested and it has been confirmed that I have a muscle injury.
“If there is something that hurts me, it is not being able to help the team in these highly demanding matches in which we play and also not being able to return the love and energy that you transmit to me on the pitch.
“I can’t do anything but speak frankly, work hard and cheer on the team with my soul.”
Zidane calm
Real coach Zinedine Zidane has said he will make any decision that they wish to take about his position “easy” for the club.
The Frenchman, who has won three Champions League trophies and two La Liga titles in two spells as Real coach, could find his future under threat should Real end the season trophyless.
The La Liga champions were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by third tier Alcoyano in January and were defeated comfortably by Chelsea in their Champions League semi-final this week.
”Let’s just finish this season. What I will say is that I’ll make things easy for the club, always, because they’ve always given me everything,” Zidane told a media conference on Saturday.
“I’ll make things very easy, but right now we are all focused on the four remaining games and ending the season well. That’s what motivates me. All the rest is just talk,” he said.
