A youngster from the Mumbai suburb of Jogeshwari, who had moved to New Zealand as a child, created history at the Wankhede on Saturday, emulating Jim Laker and Anil Kumble’s 10-wicket-in-an-innings feats.

While Ajaz recalled how he had been inspired by watching highlights of Kumble’s haul in the second innings against Pakistan at the Kotla in 1999, the former India captain welcomed him to the elite ‘Perfect 10’ club.

With all 10 wickets in his kitty, Patel also surpassed the great Richard Hadlee to record the best figures by a New Zealand bowler. Hadlee had taken 9/52 versus Australia at Brisbane in 1985.

“Welcome to the club #AjazPatel #Perfect10 Well bowled! A special effort to achieve it on Day1 & 2 of a test match,” tweeted Kumble soon after Patel completed his achievement.

Later in another video, Kumble said: “The expectations will only go up from here. People will now expect 10-for from you.”

Former India captain Virender Sehwag tweeted: “One of the most difficult things to achieve in the game. 10 wickets in an innings.
A day to remember for the rest of your life, #AjazPatel. Born in Mumbai, creating history in Mumbai.”
