Ash Barty won the Wimbledon Women’s Singles title last week, defeating Karolina Pliskova in three sets

1. Ash (short for Ashleigh) Barty was born in Queensland, Australia, on April 24, 1996.

2. Barty started playing tennis at age four and already started playing with adults when she was just 12.

3. In 2011, Barty won the Junior Wimbledon title, aged 15.

4. In 2012, Barty made it to the Australian Open by winning the Australian Open Wildcard event at the end of 2011 that helped her secure the spot.

5. Barty and Casey Dellacqua are now the first all-Australian team to reach the Women’s Doubles final (Australian Open 2013) since Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Helen Gourlay Cawley, who won in 1977.

6. After the 2014 US Open, Barty took a break from tennis.

7. Barty played professional cricket as she trained with the Queensland Fire and went on to play 13 competitive matches with the Western Suburbs District Cricket Club.

8. She returned to tennis in 2016.

9. Barty has won many accolades in Australia. She is the National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador for Tennis Australia and was the Female Sportsperson of the Year at the National Dreamtime Awards, that honours Indigenous Australians.

10. Barty won her maiden Grand Slam singles title at the French Open in 2019, where she beat Czech Marketa Vondrousova 6-1, 6-3 and became the first Australian to win in Paris since Margaret Court in 1973.

11. She won the Wimbledon Women’s Singles title last week, defeating Karolina Pliskova in three sets.

12. Barty is only about 5’5’’ tall, which is not very tall for a tennis player.

13. In June 2019, she became the first Australian player to become world #1 since Evonne Goolagong in 1976.

14. Barty has been dating Australian golfer Garry Kissick, whose she met while playing golf at a club in Brisbane.

15. In 2020, Barty also became the Brookwater Golf Club women’s champion.
