For most sportspersons, the pandemic-induced lockdown has been rather frustrating. But for Jwala Gutta and Mary Ann Gomes, it has brought some welcome relief from extremely busy schedules and constant travelling and has allowed them to relax a little.

Speaking during the digital launch of the West Bengal Sports and Recreation Council of Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI), the duo shared their inspiring career journeys and anecdotes.

Asked how she was coping with the pandemic, the vivacious Jwala, who is working on setting up her badminton academy, said: “I have been doing what I want to do. I am not taking any unnecessary pressure.

“I have travelled so much — and I really don’t enjoy it — that I am liking staying at home for a change. And frankly there are people who are dying of hunger. We are much better off.”

Chess star Mary supported Jwala, saying she, too, is taking the rather unusual break in her stride.

“I am home after a long time. I was constantly travelling before. I am playing online, which is a great way to keep in shape in our game. I am trying to keep in touch with people and generally following a more relaxed lifestyle,” she said.

Jwala emphasised that playing a sport is much more than just a good habit. “Only in sports you are called a world champion. A sportsperson is a peace ambassador for his or her country. Sport brings countries together,” she said.
