Indian shuttlers had a good day at the Japan Open badminton tournament here on Tuesday, with HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen and the in-form doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty all going through to the quarter finals.

Fresh off their triumph in the Korea Open, Satwiksairaj and Chirag secured progress to the last-eight stage with a dominant 21-17, 21-11 win over the Danish pair of Lasse Molhede and Jeppe Bay.

Lakshya, the Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold medallist, went through to the quarters in straight sets. He was up against Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama and beat him convincingly 21-14, 21-16.

The 21-year-old took just 50 minutes to take the Japanese shuttler out and having cruised to a win in the opening game, the Almora youth never let slip the advantage and grabbed the match quite comfortably.

For Prannoy, though, it was a match-up with compatriot Kidambi Srikanth. Losing the opening game, Prannoy fought back strongly to claim the next two games for a 19-21, 21-9, 21-9 win.

However, the Indian women’s pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly suffered an exit despite their valiant efforts against Nami Matsuyama and Chiraru Shida in their Round-of-16 outing. They lost 21-23, 19-21.

For the men’s duo, Satwik and Chirag, it was an easy outing as they won in straight games.

On Wednesday, double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu made yet another first-round exit with her 12-21, 13-21 loss to Zhang Yi Man of China. It was her seventh first round exit in 13 BWF World Tour events this year.
