As if the Derby drubbing was not bad enough, SC East Bengal were embarrassed 0-3 by Mumbai City FC at the GMC Stadium in Bambolim, Goa, to make it a nightmarish start for Robbie Fowler’s team in the Indian Super League (ISL).
Adam Le Fondre (20’, 48’) scored a brace while Hernan Santana (58’) netted the third goal for Mumbai City. Hugo Boumous also credits a mention as he had a role in all three goals.
With six points from three matches, Mumbai City climbed to the top of the points table. SC East Bengal, in their debut ISL season, occupy the 11th spot in the 11-team league.
Fowler, who spent most of his playing career in the English Premier League and was later a coach in the A-League in Australia, was severely critical of his players.
“Individual lapses cost us dear. As a team, we have to do better in terms of concentration. Importance of concentration in football is huge. We need to learn that quickly. We will coach the players… A few of them have probably never been coached before. We will try to make our players better, we will try to make our Indian players better,” the former Liverpool star said.
SC East Bengal suffered an early setback when defender Daniel Fox picked up an injury as early as in the seventh minute of the game and had to be replaced. They never really recovered after that and were completely outplayed by Mumbai City.
