Glenn Maxwell’s all-round performance and Harshal Patel’s hat-trick helped Royal Challengers Bangalore secure a handsome 54-run win over Mumbai Indians at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

Captain Virat Kohli (51), scoring his second successive half-century to go past the milestone of 10,000 runs in T20 cricket, and Yuzvendra Chahal (3/11) were the other heroes who helped RCB thump the defending champions, who have now slipped to second from bottom and are in a precarious position.

As for RCB, after two disappointing shows on the trot, they bounced back well enough to cement their third position on the table with 12 points from 10 matches.

With Kohli firing at the top and Maxwell (56) playing the switch-hits and reverse-hits to superb effect, RCB looked set to post a formidable total. But Jasprit Bumrah (3/36), removing both Maxwell and AB de Villiers off successive deliveries in the 19th over of the RCB innings, and Trent Boult (1/17) kept things tight towards the end to restrict RCB to a par score of 165/6.

In reply, captain Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock got Mumbai off to a solid start. But Chahal struck in the seventh over of the run chase to dismiss De Kock before Maxwell had Rohit hole out at the deep soon after.

Harshal show

Harshal, varying his pace and executing the slower ball really well, accounted for comeback man Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Rahul Chahar off the first three balls of the 17th over, being the third cricketer for RCB (after Praveen Kumar and Samuel Badree) to record a hat-trick.

That over from Harshal (4/17), who has now taken his wickets tally in this edition to 23, practically sealed the game for RCB.
