Ravindra Jadeja scored runs that turned out to be priceless, took wickets and also effected a run-out dismissal with a direct hit. What more could he have done?

And yet if Chennai Super Kings hadn’t won the game after such brilliance from Jadeja, it surely would have been a travesty of justice.

Thanks to Jadeja’s all-round contribution, the Super Kings brought the high-flying Royal Challengers Bangalore down to earth at the Wankhede on Sunday, crushing them by 69 runs and snapping their winning streak.

Recording their fourth victory on the trot, the Super Kings too are now on eight points.

RCB, though, weren’t doing too badly after CSK won the toss and opted to bat in scorching hot weather conditions. The likes of Mohammed Siraj and Yuzvendra Chahal had done a decent job to ensure the Super Kings didn’t race away.

Raining sixes

Thereafter, Harshal Patel, who had been RCB’s trump card in the previous games, struck thrice in quick time, accounting for Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis (50) and Ambati Rayudu.

At the end of the 19th over of their innings, CSK were only 154/4. But all that Jadeja (62 not out off 28 balls), dropped on nought by Dan Christian, needed was a bit of width from Harshal and then he simply went berserk in the final over of the first session.

That game-turning over yielded CSK 37 and helped them to a formidable total of 191/4.

Plundering five sixes and a four in that over, Jadeja also emulated Chris Gayle, who did the same back in 2011 versus the now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

Thereafter, Jadeja snared three crucial scalps, including those of game-changers Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. He just bowled within the stumps which was good enough to dismiss the deadly duo and seal RCB’s fate.

Curran’s strike

Devdutt Padikkal and captain Kohli helped RCB motor to 44 without loss after just three overs during their reply.

But Sam Curran bowled one outside the off-stump and a tad extra bounce had the better of Kohli. That indeed was an equally important strike.
