The infighting in the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) continued on Thursday when the emergency executive committee meeting, chaired by president PT Usha, failed to ratify the appointment of the chief executive officer Raghuram Iyer.
This happened in front of the International Olympic Committee director and special invitee Jeromy Poivet who participated online.
The disgruntled members of the executive council — including senior vice-president Ajay Patel and London Olympic Games medallist, former shooter and one of the vice-presidents Gagan Narang — then released the minutes of the meeting where they accused Usha, one of India's most celebrated athletes, of leaving the meeting in a huff.
Usha, in turn, sent a mail to Poivet, apologising that "my fellow executive committee members did not even allow the commencement of the meeting."
A furious Usha later sent another email to the IOC director. "As you would agree I had to conclude the meeting as the Executive Committee members were not open to discussion. In this regard, my earlier email sent at 1800 hrs and the purported Minutes of the Meeting jointly signed by the 10 EC members is null and void."
The members claimed that they had no problem with the appointment of a CEO but they had reservations about Iyer. "That's why we have decided to re-initiate the entire process of bringing in a new CEO," an executive committee member told The Telegraph on Thursday night.
"The members while expressing their views that a CEO is a must and should be appointed put forth their concerns on the nomination of Mr Raghuram lyer as the CEO and the agenda was to put to vote where the 10 physical members and two members who joined online expressed their decent on the agenda and the vote was 12 in against of the ratification of the CEO. The 12 Members present decided that the Acting CEO Kalyan Chaubey who is the Joint Secretary of the IOA shall continue to discharge the duties as per the provisions laid out in the Constitution," the statement of the majority EC members said.
"This might put the country's bidding process for the 2036 Olympic Games in jeopardy," a senior official feared.
"The IOC delegate today said it's an internal matter of the IOA. So how can the bidding process be in danger?" countered an executive committee member.
Interestingly, Chaubey was show-caused by Usha on Wednesday for issuing a letter of recongnition to the Taekwondo Federation of India without Usha's consent in May last year. It is unlikely that Chaubey would reply.
