Hammered in the opening game, it’s a must-win situation for India Women as they take on their England counterparts in the second and penultimate ODI at The Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton on Wednesday.
Even though the Englishwomen had outplayed the visitors in all departments of the game the other day, senior pacer Jhulan Goswami feels India are in need of “just one good game which could then help the team do miracles.”
“It’s very important for us to perform as a unit. At the same time, I would say players like Smriti (Mandhana) and Harman (Harmanpreet Kaur) are just one good game away from getting back to their best.
“We’ll come back strongly. This team is very much capable of doing miracles,” Jhulan said on Tuesday.
Captain Mithali Raj had indicated after the first ODI loss that the team’s seam bowling combination may be tweaked as the quicks, especially Shikha Pandey and Pooja Vastrakar, were ineffective even in seam-friendly conditions in Bristol. The duo, though, had the backing of Jhulan.
“Shikha is coming back from a break. Pooja too is playing after a long gap, so they will do well if given a little more time,” Jhulan stated.
“They have already proved that they are quality bowlers and have single-handedly won matches for India. You just need to give them a little bit of time and then you’ll see how strongly the come back. I have full confidence in them,” Jhulan added.
The bowling group needs to fire as a unit, Jhulan emphasised. “It’s not possible to achieve big milestones only through individual performances. You have to fire as a bowling unit. We have discussed a lot of things, so hopefully, we’ll sort things out.”
Match starts: 6.30pm (IST)
