Lockie Ferguson, who did not get to play a match in IPL 2020 before Sunday, was matchless in his very first outing earning Kolkata Knight Riders a much-needed win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Abu Dhabi. It was a close affair though, with a Super Over coming into play after the scores were tied.

With the win, KKR held on to the fourth spot in the standings with 10 points.

The New Zealand speedster first finished with figures of 3/15 from his four overs, which played a massive role in restricting Sunrisers to 163/6 after KKR opted to bat first and posted 163/5 on a wicket that kept getting slower.

Then in the Super Over, Ferguson first foxed David Warner with change of pace and then bamboozled Abdul Samad with a fuller delivery, ensuring KKR chased a paltry target of 3.

Captain Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik, who had earlier stitched a vital 58-run stand for the fifth wicket, took their team home with two balls to spare. This was Morgan’s first win after being handed over the captaincy baton by Karthik.

The Sunrisers, in pursuit of 164, tweaked their opening pair with Kane Williamson partnering Jonny Bairstow and Warner going down to No. 4. Williamson, playing with a hamstring discomfort, and Bairstow played some magnificent strokes to get the Sunrisers off to a flier — 58 off the first six overs.

Morgan brought on Ferguson and he responded immediately with the wicket of his New Zealand captain. Soon after, he cleaned up Priyam Garg with a slower one and in his next spell accounted for Manish Pandey with a yorker.

But Sunrisers captain Warner (47 not out off 33 balls) played superbly to bring his team back in the contest.

They needed 18 off the final over, but Warner took full advantage of the gaps and carted Andre Russell for three boundaries in a row.

However, with four needed off the last two balls, Russell bowled the right length to deny Warner and force a Super Over.

Thereafter, it was all about fantastic Ferguson.
