Sunrisers Hyderabad made better use of a tricky, two-paced wicket to prevail over Delhi Capitals by 15 runs and register their maiden win in IPL 2020 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Tuesday.
Put into bat, Sunrisers put up a challenging total of 162/4 and thereafter their bowlers kept things tight enough to restrict the strong Delhi Capitals batting line-up to 147/7.
The much-needed victory for the Hyderabad team was also special as it came in David Warner’s 50th match as captain in the IPL. The skipper had a better outing with the bat too, scoring a brisk 45 off 33 balls at the top of the order. The real stars for Sunrisers, though, were Jonny Bairstow (53 off 48 balls), who scored his second half-century in the tournament, Kane Williamson, who scored a fluent 41 off 26 balls in what was his first match in this IPL, and leg-spinner Rashid Khan (3/14 off his four overs), whose impact with the ball was felt for the first time in this edition of the IPL.
Making good use of the flight, Rashid first foxed Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer (17) and Shikhar Dhawan (34) before coming back for his second spell to scalp Rishabh Pant (28), which more or less won the game for Sunrisers.
Williamson came into the team in place of Mohammed Nabi. Jammu and Kashmir’s Abdul Samad made his IPL debut replacing Wriddhiman Saha in the XI.
Sunrisers benefited from a good start as Warner and Bairstow stitched a 77-run partnership within the first 10 overs. Warner, just as he was beginning to look intimidating, was removed by Delhi Capitals’ senior leg-spinner Amit Mishra (2/35).
Later, Sunrisers’ left-arm medium pacer T. Natarajan came up with an excellent exhibition of yorkers, particularly when bowling to Shimron Hetmyer (21 off 12) and Pant.
