Kolkata Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan laid more emphasis on the role of Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib-al Hasan in their victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad than that of opener Shubman Gill, who was adjudged Man of the Match for his cautious yet smart 57.
Shakib’s contribution was important as alongwith taking a wicket and conceding only 20 off his four overs, he also effected a run-out dismissal of rival skipper Kane Williamson that was crucial to the outcome of the game.
“The chase was tricky and I thought it (the pitch) was sluggish if anything. But you need to adapt to all conditions. We did that well, as it has been a vast improvement from two days ago (versus Punjab Kings).
“Gill was very good, but Shakib massive. To have the strength and depth to call upon an experienced campaigner like him is a luxury. He made a huge impact in this game,” Morgan said at the post-match presentation.
The Knight Riders have only one game left to play in the group phase of this IPL, versus Rajasthan Royals, at Sharjah on Thursday. Winning that game could confirm their play-offs berth.
“Having missed out the play-offs last year, we knew our squad is reasonable. At present, we are just focused on playing good cricket,” Morgan said.
