Gymnastics coach Bisheshwar Nandi, who guided Dipa Karmakar to an unprecedented fourth-place finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has been named coach of the Indian women’s team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in place of the controversial Rohit Jaiswal. Jaiswal, who was earlier designated as the women’s team coach, was dropped from the CWG-bound team after he was accused by gymnast Aruna Budda Reddy for videographing her without her consent.

“I’ve done my biometrics a day before and am expecting my visa to arrive by tomorrow. I will join the team by July 29,” Nandi, who is at the national camp here, said. Jaiswal’s exclusion could be a setback for her ward and India medal hopeful Pranati Nayak, but Nandi said he would take care of every team member. “It would not be an issue as I’ve known the gymnasts for many years now. Also, I have my ward Protistha Samanta who I’ve trained for years. She is quite promising. She took part in the World Cups in Egypt and Azerbaijan earlier this year,” Nandi said.

In late May, a three-member inquiry committee was set up by SAI to look into Aruna’s allegations against Jaiswal. She had said that the coach videographed her without consent during a physical fitness test conducted in March. After the allegations were made, the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) had given the coach a clean chit. But Aruna then wanted to seek legal recourse and the matter was taken up by SAI. The gymnastics squad: Men: Satyajit Mondal, Yogeshwar Singh and Saif Tamboli. Women: Pranati Nayak, Ruthuja Nataraj, Protishta Samanta, Bavleen Kaur.
