The India Davis Cup squad will be selected on Monday when the All India Tennis Association (AITA) selection committee meets in New Delhi to decide who all will make the trip to Islamabad for the Asia-Oceania Zone Group 1 Davis Cup.

With the squad mainly to be decided on rankings, and all fit players having made themselves available, there isn’t really any scope for a surprise. The squad that had played against Italy in India’s last Davis Cup tie in Calcutta, should be retained, according to AITA secretary general, Hironmoy Chatterjee.

However, the coach and member of the selection committee Zeeshan Ali will not be in New Delhi on Monday. “I have not been asked to come for any meeting,” he told The Telegraph. “But as far as the team is concerned, there is no problem. Everyone, who has made himself available, is willing to travel to Pakistan. Our issues with security have been addressed and we are all looking forward to it.”

Asked why Zeeshan will not be in the meeting on Monday, Chatterjee said: “He can join us over a conference call. See, the team will be decided as per rankings, so there is really not much to be discussed.”

He added: “We have been given assurance from the hosts Pakistan Tennis Federation and the International Tennis Federation observers that stringent security measures are in place.”

Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran had played the singles in the tie versus Italy, while Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan figured in the doubles.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tennis Federation president Salim Saifullah Khan assured the Indian team a “very safe and secure environment” for the tie.

“We are eagerly waiting for the Indian team. There will be good arrangements for Indian fans and the players. We will host the tie in a very safe and secure atmosphere,” he told a news agency.
