Hubert Hurkacz won the Miami Open here on Sunday, defeating Italy’s Jannik Sinner 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, clinching his second title in the Sunshine State this season.
In January, the 24-year-old Polish won the Delray Beach Open and is now the only player in history to have reached and conquered both titles in the same year.
This was also Hurkacz’s first career Masters-level title.
The 19-year-old Sinner had a dream run in the tournament here, but could not overcome Hurkacz at the final hurdle. With the Miami Open title, Hurkacz is expected to rise to world No. 16 in the next ATP rankings, while Sinner will appear as No. 21. For both, these would be their career-best rankings till date.
On Saturday, world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty retained her Miami Open crown as Bianca Andreescu’s injury curse struck again. Barty was leading 6-3, 4-0 when Andreescu was forced to retire with an injury to her right ankle.
