Son Heung-min scored inside a minute and Harry Kane scored twice as the hosts led 3-0 after 16 minutes.
Bale came off the bench in the 71st minute, but West Ham ripped up the script with a stupendous fight back.

There is bad news from Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk has damaged knee ligaments and is set to undergo surgery after he was injured in Saturday’s Merseyside derby draw against Everton.
Manchester United recovered from a goal down to beat hosts Newcastle 4-1. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “We showed great resilience, great character to come back. Now we know our season started today.”
Barca lose
Barcelona fell to their first defeat under new coach Ronald Koeman as they lost 0-1 at Getafe on Saturday. Jaime Mata scored the only goal in the 56th minute from a penalty.
Juve held
Juventus winger Federico Chiesa was sent off on his debut and the Serie A champions also had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside as they were held to a 1-1 draw at promoted Crotone.
