You can't really stop Rafael Nadal from going all guns blazing at the French Open.
The Spaniard made it to his 15th Roland Garros quarter-final after beating Italian teenager Jannik Sinner 7-5 6-3 6-0 on Monday. In the ongoing Grand Slam, Nadal is eyeing a slot in the record books, by aiming to become the first man to clinch 21 Grand Slam singles crowns, and a record 14th Roland Garros title.
After the match, Nadal heaped praise on the Italian teenager and said, “I played against a very good player who has a great future and I’m very happy with the win. I started playing well the first couple of games and then I played too defensive for a few games and gave him the chance to step into the court and play his shots. After that the match changed a lot.”
Nadal has won his last 35 sets at Roland Garros since 2019. The one against the Italian was his 104th match win at the French Open. Nadal will now square off with Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman, who beat Jan-Lennard Struff to make the quarters.
Swiatek through
The going has been good for defending French Open champion Iga Swiatek, too. She beat Ukraine's Marta Kostyk in straight sets to make it to the quarter-finals, registering her 22nd consecutive set win at the prestigious tournament. However, the win wasn't quite easy. “It was hard for me to adapt. The light was really bright and I had to adjust, sometimes I was facing the lights when I had to smash, it was very hard," Swiatek told Reuters after the match.
Swiatek was challenged by Kostyk, and the Polish player, who is eyeing her second consecutive Roland Garros crown, said, "Her defence was crazy, it was hard for me to finish the points a few times. She was getting everywhere, so big bravo to her, she has a bright future ahead of her.”
Swiatek will face Greece's Maria Sakkari on Wednesday. This will be the first time the two will meet each other on court. “Hopefully, it is going to be good. She is the kind of player who likes to play defence as well, as my opponent today. I am just going to be ready. I am going to be patient and hopefully it is going to get results,” Swiatek told the media on Monday.
