Naomi Osaka has already become a subject of vehement discussion ahead of the French Open. The world no. 2, who is yet to go beyond the third round at the Roland Garros, said she will not take part in news conferences throughout the Grand Slam.
She took to Twitter to elaborate on this, and said, “I am writing this to say that I am not going to do any press during Roland Garros. I have often felt that people have no regard for athletes' mental health and this rings true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one. We're often sat there and asked questions that we've been asked multiple times before or asked questions that bring doubt into our minds and I am not going to subject myself to people who doubt me.”
Although this is a personal call towards better mental health, this might cost Osaka dear, as players are fined a massive sum for dropping out of press conferences at Grand Slams.
The last time Osaka was in the limelight for reasons other than her on-court flamboyance, she had boycotted her semi-final clash at the Western & Southern Open in a bid to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
Sumit Nagal crashes out
Following in the footsteps of Ankita Raina, Prajnesh Guneswaran and Ramkumar Ramanathan, India's Sumit Nagal also failed to make it to the main draw at French Open. Nagal crashed out in the second round after losing 3-6, 3-6 to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.
The proceedings remained in Tabilo's favour as Nagal dropped his serve as many as five times. He could break Tabilo only twice in the entire face-off.
Had Nagal won, it would have been a hat-trick of main draw appearances for him at Grand Slams.
India's remaining contenders at Roland Garros are Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan in the men's doubles main draw.
