Theo Walcott gave them a lifeline with a close-range finish in the 77th minute. Then in the 90th minute Tottenham substitute Pape Sarr was adjudged to have fouled Ainsley Maitland-Niles as he attempted to clear the bouncing ball.

After a long VAR check, Ward-Prowse delivered his spot kick high into the top corner beyond former Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Leeds United earned a vital three points in their fight for survival with an entertaining 4-2 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, to ensure they head into the international break above the relegation zone.

Jack Harrison smashed home the opener for Leeds from near the penalty spot in the sixth minute. Luke Ayling doubled the lead from a corner and Leeds substitute Rasmus Kristensen added a third just after the hour mark. Jonny pulled a goal back for Wolves three minutes later.

Matheus Cunha cut the deficit further with a deflected shot in the 73rd minute. Jonny was shown a red card for a studs-up challenge on Ayling that left the Leeds fullback writhing in agony.

The sending off in the 84th minute took the wind out of Wolves’ sails and substitute Rodrigo chipped Sa to score Leeds’ fourth in the seventh minute of injury time, despite referee Michael Salisbury being asked by VAR to check for a foul in the build-up.

Magpies win

Striker Alexander Isak netted a brace, including a last-gasp penalty, as Newcastle United ended Nottingham Forest’s nine-match unbeaten EPL streak at home with a 2-1 win on Friday.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies moved up to 47 points and head into the international break with their aim of Champions League qualification now within touching distance.

Emmanuel Dennis put Forest ahead in the 26th minute.

Isak restored parity just before half-time after Joe Willock’s cross dropped behind him and he twisted his body to volley the ball off his shin and in off the far post.

He put a finger to his mouth to silence the Forest fans.
