Star forward Sunil Chhetri will like to add the coveted Durand Cup title to his illustrious career when he leads Bengaluru FC against Mumbai City FC in the summit clash at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.

For Chhetri, 38, the Durand Cup is the only trophy missing from his trophy-laden cabinet.

It’s also the same for Bengaluru FC, who have won all major Indian competitions since coming into existence in 2013, but not the Durand Cup.

“We’re motivated enough because of the way we’ve progressed as a team. That I have not won it or that the team hasn’t been to a Durand final before is not important. We want to treat this as another game and apply ourselves in the best possible way to bring home the trophy,” Chhetri said at the pre-match news conference on Saturday.

A resolute, gritty performance aided by an own goal from Hyderabad FC’s Odei Onaindia took Bengaluru FC to their first-ever Durand on Thursday.

Mumbai City had ousted Mohammedan Sporting in the first semi-final. WIth Roy Krishna and Chhetri ready to torment Mumbai City, much will depend on Senegalese defender Mourtada Fall’s performance.

Mumbai City have the highest scorer of the tournament, Lallianzuala Chhangte (seven goals), in their ranks and someone of the quality of Greg Stewart marshalling the midfield with authority.

“We will have to play as a team tomorrow (Sunday),” Bengaluru coach Simon Grayson said.

“We don’t have any injuries. Our target will be to win the trophy without any injuries. We are in the final and we will make sure that we win the trophy because we have the mentality to win,” he added.

Mumbai City coach Des Buckingham is well aware of Krishna’s strength from his Wellington Phoenix days in the A-League.

“It is not only about individual skill Bengaluru have but the attacking prowess they possess when the players link up.”
