Mohun Bagan Super Giant, on Friday, officially announced the signing of Sahal Abdul Samad from Kerala Blasters. The 26-year-old signed a five-year contract with the ISL champions.
In a swap deal, Bagan defender Pritam Kotal has joined Kerala Blasters. Kotal was the Bagan captain last season. Bagan are believed to have paid a transfer fee of Rs 2.5 crore, while Kotal's transfer fee was Rs 1 crore.
“I’m feeling proud just at the thought that I’ll be donning the iconic Mohun Bagan jersey. I’ve heard all my life that you start operating at a different level while wearing the green and maroon colours. Moreover, the Calcutta Derby is often regarded in the same level as the El Clasico,” Sahal said.
Sahal said he is looking forward to playing in the Derby.
“I’ve never played a Derby in my life. But the fact that I can now play in that match for Mohun Bagan makes me feel great. The stadium will be packed with fans cheering for our team," he said.
Sahal, who got married on Wednesday, said the Bagan move was his best wedding gift.
“I feel like signing for Bagan is the best wedding gift. They won the ISL title last season. We have brilliant foreign players and some members of the India national team in the squad. I’ve never won the ISL title in my career. That’s why I signed for Mohun Bagan, to win this trophy. I believe Mohun Bagan will only get better and that I’ll realise my dream of winning the trophy.”
Sahal also said Bagan's dream of competing against top teams of Asia was one of the reasons for him to make the switch. "I have never played in the AFC Cup. When Mohun Bagan’s management contacted me, they told me their plans of becoming India’s best team and competing with the best in Asia. I want to align myself with this mentality of the club."
Sahal revealed he had spoken to the national team coach Igor Stimac before signing the Bagan deal.
"He gave me his blessings for this move. He motivated me to only get better and help the club succeed," the India midfielder said.
