Carlo Ancelotti says that with his Real Madrid eyeing another European Cup he has no time to consider the possibility of coaching Kylian Mbappe next season.
At least not yet.
Giving his first news conference since Mbappe confirmed on Friday he will be leaving Paris Saint-Germain, Ancelotti faced the inevitable question of if he could confirm his destination was Madrid.
Ancelotti said the only thing he wants he and his team to think about is the June 1 Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at the Wembley.
“(Mbappe’s future) is not a subject I think about now,” Ancelotti said on Saturday after Madrid’s Spanish league win at Granada. “Until June 1 we know exactly what we need to focus on.”
Mbappe announced his final home game for PSG will be on Sunday against Toulouse.
PSG coach Luis Enrique said on Saturday his star forward “still has not said where he is going, but we all believe it’s clear.”
Enrique wished him well, in any case.
“I understand and comprehend his decision,” the Spanish coach said. “It has been seven years. He is a club legend. I wish him the best in the future.”
Ruthless form
Carlo Ancelotti’s side continued their superb form following their midweek Champions League semi-final win over Bayern Munich, reaching 90 points in the standings, 15 clear of second-placed Girona.
Granada players keeping the guard of honour tradition of lining up to applaud the champions as they entered the field before kick-off.
Fran Garcia broke the deadlock with an easy finish after a long series of passes in the 38th minute before he set up Arda Guler to slot home and extend the advantage just before half-time.
Brahim Diaz made it 3-0 in the 49th minute with a shot into the near post, and the Morocco international scored his second nine minutes later off a Luka Modric pass.
“We all wanted to show that we want to get maximum points in the league. I’m very happy with the goals,” Diaz told RMTV.
“I reached 12 goals and seven assists. It’s very easy to play here, with these teammates. The most important thing is the titles. We already have the Super Cup, the league and we want the Champions League.”
Granada remain in 19th place with 21 points, while 15th-placed Mallorca’s victory over Las Palmas earlier in the day confirmed their relegation after just one season in the top flight.
Ancelotti had words of encouragement for the relegated side.
“In sport you have to look at defeat too, it has to be an opportunity to do better in the future,” the Italian told reporters.
Victory parade
On Sunday, Madrid celebrated the league title with fans, meeting with government officials and parading through the streets of the capital.
Madrid clinched its 36th league title last weekend, with four rounds to spare, but they couldn’t celebrate the triumph right away because they still had to play Bayern.
“I’m sure that in three weeks we will be back here,” Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos said while addressing the crowd on Sunday.
Several thousand fans greeted the squad as it paraded through the city and headed to the club’s traditional celebration spot at Cibeles square.
The league trophy was handed to the team during a ceremony at the club’s training centre.
Madrid usually also celebrate their titles at the Bernabeu, but the stadium was being used for a concert on Sunday.
Most players and club president Florentino Perez spoke to the crowd, which chanted some of the team’s traditional fighting songs.
