Qatar 2022: Senegal secure knockout berth for first time in 20 years

Great news for Senegal fans.

The West African nation has become the first team from Africa to qualify for the Round of 16 of the ongoing Fifa World Cup in Qatar. But there's more to savour.

This is the second time the current African champions have reached the knockout phase in World Cup history.

The first time the country made it to the knockouts was back in 2002. So skipper Kalidou Koilibaly and company have ended a 20-year wait to reach this stage in the competition.

Strikes from Koulibaly (70') and Ismaila Sarr (44' via penalty) ensured a spirited 2-1 win over Ecuador, helping the team bag six points in the Group A standings. The solitary goal from Ecuador came via 21-year-old Moises Caicedo in the 67th minute.
