Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp blasted his side’s effort in a humiliating 3-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion that he called the worst ever in his reign.
Winger Solly March scored twice and created a third for Brighton as they dominated the game from start to finish, with Liverpool barely able to string together a single decent attack.
“Massively frustrated, congratulations to Brighton on a super game against a bad opponent. We were not good today, I can’t remember a good phase or period,” an irate Klopp said.
“Doing better than today (Saturday) should be easy, because this is a really low point. I can’t remember a worse game,” he added.
Despite losing 3-1 to Brentford in their last Premier League game on January 2, Klopp said that he had been confident coming into Saturday’s game that his side could get a much-needed win.
“There was no sign for this performance before the game, but that’s probably how it is sometimes. There’s nothing that I thought yesterday (Friday) or this morning that this could happen.”
Liverpool’s campaign has been derailed by poor performances and injuries to key players.
Martinez buoys Inter
Milan: Fourth-placed Inter Milan secured a 1-0 home win over strugglers Hellas Verona thanks to an early goal from striker Lautaro Martinez in a Serie A game with few chances on Saturday.
It took just three minutes for Martinez to open the scoring when he picked up the ball inside the box and fired it into the far left corner for his ninth league goal of the season.
Martinez scored again in the 63rd minute when he chipped over keeper Lorenzo Montipo but the goal was disallowed for his foul on Pawel Dawidowicz.
A first-half penalty from Mattia Zaccagni and a late Felipe Anderson strike helped Lazio secure a 2-0 win at Sassuolo on Sunday and keep pace in the top-four race.
Victory means Lazio remain fifth with 34 points, three behind Inter.
Lazio struck just before half-time when Zaccagni converted his spot-kick after Jeremy Toljan handled the ball in the penalty area. Anderson made it 2-0 late into added time.
