Manchester United’s David de Gea should save Chelsea’s second goal “100 times out of 100” according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after errors by the hapless goalkeeper saw his side suffer a 1-3 defeat in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.
The Spaniard was at fault for Chelsea’s opener by Olivier Giroud in first-half stoppage time and then compounded that error by inexplicably allowing Mason Mount’s shot to squirm through him and into the net early in the second half.
It continued a worrying downturn in form for De Gea.
“David knows he should have saved the second goal but that’s done now,” Solskjær said.
“It’s hard for a keeper to make amends, apart from David making two or three fantastic saves after. I can’t speak for De Gea’s confidence, but he is mentally very strong,” Solskjaer said. “He knows he should save that one 100 times out of 100 but that’s football for you.”
Time for a change?
United should replace De Gea with Dean Henderson next season, former England striker Alan Shearer said.
A string of errors from De Gea have prompted calls for him to be replaced as first choice by Henderson. “If the goalkeeper makes one mistake, or possibly two, you think you should stick with him,” former Newcastle United striker Shearer told BBC.
“But it keeps happening. I think you only bring Dean Henderson back to Manchester United as the number one.”
Former club defender Phil Neville said the keeper was low on confidence.
