Newcastle United made light work of north-east rivals Sunderland as Alexander Isak’s double secured a 3-0 win and a place in the FA Cup fourth round at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Second-tier Sunderland might have fancied their chances with Newcastle, popularly known as Magpies, on a run of five defeats in their last six English Premier League games, but were no match for Eddie Howe’s side.

The first meeting of the sides since 2016 never really threatened any fireworks and while Sunderland did improve to create a few chances, Izak’s late penalty after a foul on Anthony Gordon by Ballard sent the away fans into party mode.

In the day’s other early ties, minor league Maidstone United, the lowest-ranked club left in the competition, beat third-tier Stevenage 1-0 to reach the fourth round for the first time — Sam Corne scoring the only goal from the penalty spot.

Championship leaders Leicester City won 3-2 at Millwall while Ipswich Town, who are also targeting a Premier League return, won 3-1 at Wimbledon. Coventry City thrashed Oxford United 6-2.

Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham also made it to the fourth round while fellow league sides Brentford and Wolves will endure a replay after they drew 1-1.

Spurs beat Burnley 1-0 with a late goal from Pedro Porro on Friday, while Fulham overcame Rotherham 1-0 with a first-half strike from Bobby De Cordova-Reid.

In London, Wolves played almost the entire match with 10 men but they came
from behind to earn a replay against Brentford.

Spurs have not won the FA Cup since 1991 and it made heavy work of a home tie against a side second to last in the league. Although Ange Postecoglou’s team was on top throughout, Burnley defended stoutly and it wasn’t until the 78th minute that Porro got the breakthrough.

His shot from 25 metres out was a worthy match winner and one of several spectacular strikes in the three games.

Only five league places separate Wolves and Brentford so, on paper, their fixture was one of the most evenly matched.

Brentford gained the momentum after just nine minutes when Joao Gomes was sent off for a bad foul. It took the lead shortly before halftime when Neal Maupay controlled a loose ball in the penalty box and fired home.
