David Lalhlansanga scored four goals in Mohammedan Sporting’s dominating 6-0 victory over Jamshedpur FC, but that was not enough to take them to the quarter finals of the Durand Cup.
F. Lalremsanga scored the other two goals for Mohammedan Sporting at the Kishore Bharati Stadium on Sunday.
Mohammedan Sporting needed to win by seven goals to qualify for the last-eight stage and as a result, Mohun Bagan Super Giant sneaked into the knockout round as the second-best runners-up.
Lalremsenga’s first-time finish gave the lead for the local side in the 10th minute of the game. He doubled his team’s advantage five minutes later. The home side went three ahead before the 30-minute mark. David Lalhlansanga continued his good form in the tournament, scoring in the 28th minute.
After resumption, the Red Miners started to threaten going forward and earned themselves a penalty as Ashley Koli was fouled.
He took the resultant penalty but it was saved by Mohammedan Sporting goalkeeper Lalbiakhlua Jongte.
Mohammedan Sporting scored their fourth soon through Lalhlansanga and completed his hattrick in the 82nd minute. The striker dribbled past two defenders and beat Jamshedpur keeper Mohit Singh Dhami.
NorthEast United FC advanced to the quarter finals after a convincing 3-1 victory over Downtown Heroes in Guwahati.
