Manchester United’s four-game winning run ended abruptly as the red devils slumped to a 1-0 defeat against a gritty Real Sociedad in the Europa League group stage.
The winning goal of the match, scored by Brais Mendez in the 59th minute, came via a controversial penalty decision. The ball, hit by former Manchester City player David Silva, seemed to have struck substitute Lizandro Martinez’s knee before bouncing off to hit his elbow. The penalty was awarded, with a VAR check confirming the referee’s call.
The game was played after consultation with the Football Association and Uefa following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
No music was played in the stadium around the match and both sides wore black armbands and stood for a perfectly observed minute's silence as a mark of respect.
Arsenal win
Earlier, Debutant Marquinhos and Eddie Nketiah stole the show with a goal and an assist each as Arsenal started their Europa League group stage campaign with a 2-1 win over FC Zurich.
Manager Mikel Arteta made seven changes from the side that started at Old Trafford last Sunday, handing Marquinhos and Fabio Viera their first starts for the team.
Arsenal scored the first goal through a counter-attack with Nketiah assisting Marquinhos. Nketiah gave away a penalty just before half-time, helping FC Zurich draw level.
However, Nketiah made amends by scoring the winner in the second half courtesy a wonderful cross from Marquinhos
