Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus' second-half goals gave West Ham a 2-0 win over Manchester United in the English Premier League's early game on Saturday.

West Ham, recovering from a bruising 1-5 defeat to Liverpool in the League Cup in midweek, move up to sixth on 30 points. United, who have not scored in their last four games in all competitions, drop to eighth with 28 points.

The first half was low on quality and its best chance fell to Alejandro Garnacho in the 35th minute, but the winger lost his balance and shot straight at Alphonse Areola.

West Ham nearly scored immediately after, with a dangerous cross from Bowen forcing Jonny Evans into a smart block as the first half ended with more urgency.

Bowen nearly opened the scoring shortly after the break with a good header from a James Ward-Prowse corner, but his attempt was well saved by Onana.

The winger finally broke the deadlock, however, with his 11th league goal of the season, taking Paqueta's dinked ball in his stride before Onana's save rebounded off the forward and into the net.

Paqueta then capitalised on Kobbie Mainoo's mistake in midfield to set up Kudus, who fired home past Onana to secure all three points for the hosts.

The defeat, United's eighth in the league, will pile further pressure on manager Erik ten Hag, who was taunted by the jubilant West Ham fans before the final whistle.

Spurs move up

Tottenham Hotspur moved into the top-four after beating Everton in a thrilling encounter.

Richarlison opened the scoring against his former club with his fourth goal in three matches, before Son Heung-min doubled Spurs' advantage soon after.

Everton deservedly pulled a goal back through Andre Gomes, in his first Premier League game since May 2022.

But Spurs move above Manchester City — absent from league action due to the Club World Cup — into fourth.

Defeat for Everton ended a four-match winning run and leaves then just four points above the relegation zone.

Aston Villa held

In Birmingham, Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Sheffield United in a game marked by late goals and more VAR disputes on Friday.

Although Villa dominated, Cameron Archer put Sheffield ahead with three minutes left, only for Nicolo Zaniolo to equalise in the seventh minute of time added on.

Villa were superior throughout in front of a boisterous home crowd and it would rue the video referee for decisions that went against it.

Two penalty claims were rejected early in the first half and a Leon Bailey goal was chalked off after 59 minutes when the review spotted a foul on Sheffield goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.

Referee Anthony Taylor looked at another possible penalty for handball with 17 minutes remaining but again ruled against the home side.

When the deadlock was broken it came at the other end. Former Villa striker Cameron Archer popped up with a clinical finish after good work from Gustavo Hamer on the left.

Landmark

Rebecca Welch blew her whistle to start the match between Fulham and Burnley on Saturday in a landmark moment for the league.

She was applauded by some fans as she emerged from the tunnel ahead of the match at Craven Cottage.

Welch has already worked as the fourth official in the league, for the match between Fulham and Manchester United on November 4. She has handled matches in the second-tier Championship and FA Cup.
