Every game is tough but we know what to do. We know what our demand is there, to stay in this group and to keep our positions open for going through, says Hag

Manchester United are still in the running for a place in the Champions League round of 16 despite Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat by Galatasaray leaving them bottom of Group A, manager Erik ten Hag said.

United, who lost 4-3 at Bayern Munich in their opener last month, twice took the lead against the Turkish champions through Rasmus Hojlund but were pegged back by goals from Wilfried Zaha and Kerem Akturkoglu before Mauro Icardi scored the winner.

“Everything is open. There are still four games to go and we have a double (game) with Copenhagen,” Ten Hag told TNT Sports after United lost for a sixth time in all competitions this season.

“Every game is tough but we know what to do. We know what our demand is there, to stay in this group and to keep our positions open for going through.”

A mistake from United goalkeeper Andre Onana forced Brazilian midfielder Casemiro to conceded a penalty, which saw him sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Icardi let United off the hook as he drilled his spot kick wide but the Argentine slotted home a fine winner nine minutes from time to send Galatasaray up to second in the group on four points.

Bayern Munich are top on six points from two games after a 2-1 win at FC Copenhagen, who are third with one point. United are also struggling on the domestic front
and are off to their worst start to a top-flight campaign since 1989-90.

Thriller at Naples

Real Madrid fought back to secure a barnstorming 3-2 win at Napoli in their Group C clash, with the Italian side’s keeper Alex Meret scoring an unfortunate own goal to hand the Spaniards victory late in the second half.

Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham were both on target for Real in the first half to cancel out a Leo Ostigard header for Napoli, but a Piotr Zielinski penalty early in the second half drew the Italian side level.

Real scored the winner in the 78th minute as a long-range shot from Federico Valverde cannoned off the crossbar straight onto the back of the flailing Meret’s head before deflecting into his own goal.

Forward Elye Wahi scored one goal and set up another in RC Lens’s 2-1 win over Arsenal 2-1 as they celebrated the return of Europe’s premium club competition to their turf in flamboyant style.

The 20-year-old fed Adrien Thomasson for the first-half equaliser after Gabriel Jesus’s opener, before netting the winner.
