Manchester City have completed the signing of Spanish left-back Sergio Gomez from Belgian club Anderlecht. The 21-year-old, a product of Barcelona’s youth system, played under former City captain Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht last season.
An attacking full-back, Gomez is likely to be backup to Joao Cancelo, replacing Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko who was sold to Arsenal last month. Gomez is City’s fourth signing during this transfer window following the arrival of Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, England midfielder Kalvin Phillips and German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. Morata double Atletico Madrid forward Alvaro Morata made a triumphant return to La Liga as he scored twice to help the visitors win 3-0 at Getafe in their opening tie of the season on Monday.
Substitute Antoine Griezmann scored the third goal late on and Atletico had enough chances to make the result even more comprehensive under the scorching heat. “I love playing for Atletico, I’m here to leave everything on the field, to work hard and compete,” Morata said.
Di Maria injury Juventus forward Angel Di Maria suffered a thigh muscle injury on his Serie A debut and will be out of action for at least 10 days, the Turin-based club said on Tuesday. The 34-year-old Argentine international opened the scoring and set up another goal in Juve’s 3-0 victory over Sassuolo on Monday before he was withdrawn in the 66th minute. Di María scored the opener and set up the team’s third for Dusan Vlahovic.
