Manchester City needed a second-half comeback to beat Luton Town at Kenilworth Road and end their four-match winless run in the English Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s side were facing back-to-back league defeats for the first time since December 2019 when Elijah Adebayo gave Luton the lead in first-half stoppage time, rising highest to head in Andros Townsend’s cross.

But Bernardo Silva latched on to a loose ball in the penalty area and equalised for the visitors with a fine curling effort.

Three minutes later City completed the turnaround when Jack Grealish converted Julian Alvarez’s low cross.

Victory means the champions stay fourth, four points behind leaders Liverpool.

City came into Sunday’s fixture on the back of their joint-longest run without a win under Guardiola.

Leading scorer Erling Haaland was absent having picked up a foot injury in training.

Tottenham Hotspur secured a first league win since October as Brazilian striker Richarlison also returned to form with two goals in a 4-1 drubbing of a jaded-looking Newcastle United.

Ange Postecoglou’s side earned the dubious distinction of being the first league team to lead 1-0 in five successive games without winning any of them in midweek.

But this time, after Destiny Udogie tapped in his first goal for the club from Son Heung-min’s cutback after 26 minutes, they never looked back.

A sixth league defeat of the season following this week’s 3-0 defeat by Everton, leaves Eddie Howe’s Newcastle in seventh place with 26 points.

Everton’s hat-trick

Abdoulaye Doucoure scored in his 100th league appearance for Everton and substitute Lewis Dobbin netted a late second goal to earn a 2-0 win over Chelsea that inflicted a third away defeat in a row on the mid-table London club.

Dwight McNeil surged forward with the ball on 54 minutes and slipped a pass to Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez saved the one-on-one chance, but Doucoure drilled the rebound into the far corner of the net.

Academy product Dobbin scored his first goal in an Everton shirt when he thrashed home a loose ball from a corner in injury time to seal the three points.
