A Jason Cummings brace, with the second scored in added time, secured Mohun Bagan Super Giant a 2-1 win over Maziya Sports & Recreation of Maldives in Group D of the AFC Cup at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.

The Australian scored in the 28th and 90+2 minutes, while the visitors pulled one back through Tomoki Wada (45th).

Hugo Boumous set it up for Cummings to score the first goal that hit the woodwork before finding the back of the net.

Maziya equalised just before the break when Wada’s powerful shot beat Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith before flying to the top corner.

Sahal Abdul Samad crossed the ball to an onrushing Cummings who nutmegged the Maziya goalkeeper to seal three points.

The result means Mohun Bagan lead Group D with maximum points after two matches with both Maziya and Bashundhara Kings on three points each.

The reigning Indian Super League champions next face Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh in Bhubaneswar on October 24.

Penalty pass howler

Minutes before half time, there was drama. Armando Sadiku was brought down inside the box and Bagan earned a penalty.

Cummings stood over the ball to take the penalty but instead of going for a shot, he tried to lay off for Dimitri Petratos.

Rival player Sebastijan Antic was way ahead of Petratos and he got to the ball before the Australian and averted the danger.

It had shades of Lionel Messi laying off from the spot for Luis Suarez to score against Celta Vigo in a La Liga match in 2016 but unlike Cummings and Petratos, the South American duo had carried it off perfectly.

In another match of the group on Monday, hosts Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh defeated Odisha FC 3-2.
