They scored first in a 10-goal thriller, but SC East Bengal still returned empty-handed from their Hero ISL match against Odisha FC at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Tuesday.

Darren Sidoel opened the scoring for East Bengal in the 13th minute, but thereafter Odisha raced ahead with goals from Hector Rodas (who scored a brace), Javi Hernandez and Aridai Suarez. With the scoreline 4-1 in Odisha’s favour, Semboi Haokip scored in the 80th minute to rekindle East Bengal’s hopes. But soon after Isak Vanlalruatfela made it 5-2 for Odisha.

There was more drama left in the game though as East Bengal’s Daniel Chima struck twice (90’ and 90+2’) to make it 5-4. But Odisha had the last laugh with Aridai getting his second of the game in the fourth minute of added time to make it 6-4.

The result meant that Odisha joined ATK Mohun Bagan at the top of the table with six points while East Bengal remained winless.

“We don’t have enough quality for playing these kind of matches, mainly in the set pieces we are losing the positions. Our job is working out with the squad and fixing it,” SC East Bengal coach Manuel Diaz said after the game.

“At the moment we don’t have enough quality to play matches in the ISL,” he reiterated.
