Girona rallied from a goal down to win 2-1 at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday and ensured they kept their surprising lead in La Liga.

Rayo went ahead from Alvaro Garcia’s goal in the sixth minute.

But Ukraine striker Artem Dovbyk equalised three minutes before half-time when he was set up by countryman Viktor Tsyhankov. Brazilian winger Savio put the visitors ahead in the 65th when he finished off a Dovbyk shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski.

Girona have 11 wins in 13 rounds. Girona, who were in the second division two seasons ago, are partly controlled by Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi ownership even though they have one of the lowest payrolls in the league of just $54 million.

Gorka Guruzeta scored two goals and Alex Berenguer converted a stoppage-time penalty as Athletic Bilbao twice came from behind to defeat Celta Vigo 4-3 on Friday. The win extended Bilbao’s unbeaten streak at home to six games.

AC Milan held

AC Milan squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Lecce in Serie A on Saturday as Stefano Pioli’s side extended their winless run to four league games.

Olivier Giroud put AC Milan ahead just before the half-hour mark from a Theo Hernandez lofted cross before Tijjani Reijnders nutmegged Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone to double the advantage with an individual effort in the 35th minute.

But Lecce pulled one back in the 66th minute through striker Nicola Sansone and winger Lameck Banda levelled four minutes later with a precise strike from inside the box to deprive Milan of all three points.
