Kylian Mbappe got some rest ahead of the European Championship, playing only about 20 minutes as France drew 0-0 with Canada in their final warmup.

The match in Bordeaux on Sunday marked Olivier Giroud’s last home game for France. The striker, who is moving to Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer, is retiring from the French national team after Euro 2024, which starts on Friday in Germany.

Mbappe entered in the 74th minute and failed to spark France to victory. He had played the entire friendly against Luxembourg on Wednesday, when he scored in France’s 3-0 win in what was his first match since his move from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid was finally confirmed.

France’s opening game at Euro 2024 is on June 17 against Austria. Mbappe reportedly was not fully fit after the game against Luxembourg and had missed some training sessions during the week but is expected to play a key role for France in Germany.

France, runners-up to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, are in Group D along with Poland, the Netherlands and Austria. Defending European champions Italy beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 at home.

Davide Frattesi scored the only goal with a neat volley from inside the area in the 38th minute in Empoli.

Italy won Euro 2020 but missed out on qualifying for the last two World Cups. They begins their Euro 2024 campaign on Saturday against Albania. The other teams in Group B are Spain and Croatia. Spain routed Northern Ireland 5-1 on Saturday, while Croatia defeated Portugal 2-1.

Also on Sunday, Slovakia routed Wales 4-0 with goals from Juraj Kucka, Robert Bozenik and Laszlo Benes, as well as an own-goal by Ethan Ampadu, intensifying the pressure on Wales manager Rob Page. Slovakia will start their campaign on June 17 against Belgium.

Group E’s other teams are Romania and Ukraine.

Montenegro lost 3-1 at home to Georgia , who are in Group F with Portugal, Turkey and Czech Republic.

Kane upbeat

Half of Gareth Southgate’s England squad have never played at a major tournament but captain Harry Kane said that everyone who made
the cut deserved their place and there is enough experience in their ranks to be successful.

Harry Maguire, who has 63 caps, and Jack Grealish (36 caps) were among those omitted as Southgate trimmed his squad to 26 players for the June 14-July 14 European Championship.

“I think we have more than enough experience,” Kane told British media.

“Especially a lot of players who have played in two or three tournaments. There are always going to be new players, players who deserve to be here.

“For the boys who missed out... It is sad to see them go but ultimately that is what you get playing for England. The manager has to take tough decisions.

“Everyone has earned the right to be here.

“That is what we have said. Everyone brings something different to the team and we are going to need all 26 players if we are going to be successful.”

Bayern Munich forward Kane struggled with a back injury towards the end of the season but returned to play in England’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina last week and the 1-0 loss to Iceland on Friday.

“I am all good,” Kane said of his fitness. “The plan was for me to play 60 minutes against Iceland. It has been a really good camp for me personally in that sense.
