Manager Erik ten Hag and forward Anthony Martial had a go at each other during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.

Martial was given the nod by Ten Hag for the English Premier League clash at St James’ Park, with fellow striker Ramus Hojlund named on the bench.

The Frenchman scored and provided an assist in Manchester United’s recent 3-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park in Liverpool.

Yet Martial failed to build on that performance. Ten Hag had a go at the striker midway through the first half of the game before tensions boiled over just before half-time, with the pair shouting and gesturing at one another.

The French forward had failed to adequately track Newcastle defender Fabian Schar as he emerged from the back and played the ball to Kieran Trippier, who subsequently teed up Miguel Almiron to shoot just wide.

Despite their on-field spat, Martial wasn’t substituted at half-time. He remained on the pitch until after Anthony Gordon scored just before the hour mark. That proved to be the game’s only goal, ending a run of three consecutive league wins for Ten Hag’s side.

Martial has experienced an indifferent time at United since arriving from Ligue 1 side Monaco as a 19-year-old in September 2015.

Martial famously scored on his debut against Liverpool to hand United a 3-1 victory against their bitter rivals.

He went on to enjoy a good first season at Old Trafford, scoring 17 goals in all competitions and winning the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle climbed above United into fifth in the table on 26 points after 14 games as Ten Hag’s side dropped to seventh on 24.

“I couldn’t be happier with the players tonight (Saturday),” Howe told TNT Sports. “The performances we put in against three top teams were brilliant so that will give confidence, and when we get some players back we can push on even further.”

The Magpies have won three consecutive games against Manchester United in all competitions for the first time since January 1922.

“It is down to the team and how hard we work for each other,” goal-scorer Gordon said. “I am just trying to work hard and be someone who the team can rely on and I am getting the rewards at the moment so I am happy.”

Gordon scored his sixth goal of the Premier League season in the 55th minute when Kieran Trippier played a ball across the six-yard box after Manchester lost possession in midfield.

“It’s amazing to win today,” Gordon said.

“It’s been a massive week for us, some good moments, some difficult moments but we came through it as a team.”
