England will play Slovakia in the round-of-16 at Euro 2024 on Sunday after facing fierce criticism for their performances during the group stage.

Still, the runners-up three years ago are unbeaten and on the opposite side of the draw to France, Spain, Germany and Portugal.

England advanced to the knockout phase as group winners and unbeaten in three games. But, fans showed their anger at the team’s performance against Slovenia on Tuesday with loud jeers at the end of the match and some threw beer cups toward manager Gareth Southgate.

“I would have got rid of him before this tournament,” said Charlie O’Shea, a 32-year-old England fan from London, who travelled to Germany for the tournament.

The team isn’t “really gelling,” said O’Shea, wearing a retro blue England shirt.

This is Southgate’s fourth major tournament as England manager and he has always guided the team to at least the quarter finals.

Slovakia are playing in the round-of-16 at the Euros for the second time as an independent nation, having advanced to this stage in 2016. They have never gone beyond the pre-quarterfinals.

Phil Foden is back in the England squad after returning home for the birth of his child. Luke Shaw could make his first appearance at these Euros following a hamstring injury and Southgate is reportedly considering starting teenager Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.

“Everything that’s happened is now pretty irrelevant,” Southgate said.

Slovakia’s Italian coach Francesco Calzona said his team will have to limit their mistakes if they are to cause an upset.

“When England give a great performance as a group, they will be unbeatable,” Calzona said on Saturday. “We need to make the most of their mistakes and must be very careful, they have the best squad at the Euros.”
